FlightAware STEM Collaboration
Last month, we collaborated with Tim Fino to hold a STEM event for elementary school students in Detroit. Tim is the Director of the Detroit Science and Engineering Fair, an avid pilot, and a certified flight instructor. We connected with him at EAA AirVenture during our presentation last year and he was interested in incorporating FlightAware into a Raspberry Pi Code Club he holds where he teaches programming to elementary and middle school students at Detroit Public Schools.
Their first project was to construct a PiAware receiver and view the local flights in the area through SkyAware and My ADS-B Stats pages. They built a total of ten PiAwares in the class. At the end of the class, Tim is planning to take the students on orientation flights to various airports throughout the U.S. to install the PiAwares at permanent locations. In doing so, the students will be awarded their Young Eagles flight. Here’s a photo he sent us of the class.

K8DGB sent in some great photos of his PiAware site stationed in rural Delaware, Ohio. His antenna is 25 feet between his amateur satellite antennas and situated a few miles from the local municipal airport. Awesome drone shot!
ranseierkarl has been a part of the FlightAware network for over a year and submitted this photo of his installation in Ohlstadt, Bavaria. His ADS-B antenna is mounted above his DVB multiplex antennas for terrestrial and satellite TV. What a great photo that captures the beautiful Indian summer in Bavaria!

Our goal is to expand our terrestrial ADS-B coverage across the entire world, especially around airports to improve our surface coverage. If we already have coverage in your area, you can still contribute to FlightAware by building your own PiAware. It’s a fun little weekend project!
